Herbert Spencer Duckworth
Herbert Spencer Duckworth (born October 23, 1900 in Keosauqua , Iowa , † May 29, 1990 in Jacksonville , Florida ) was an American officer in the United States Navy and commander of the Jacksonville Naval Air Station . He achieved the rank of vice admiral .
Life
During his military career he served as
- Air officer during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942 on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington .
- Commanding officer on the aircraft carrier USS Cowpens 1945
- Commander of the USS Midway January 12-July 18, 1946
- Commanding officer of Jacksonville Naval Air Station from 1947 to 1948
After retiring in 1952, he served as President of the Jacksonville Art Museum . He died on May 29, 1990 at the age of 90 at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville. Duckworth was honored as the first to fly an American flag over an occupied Japanese military airfield. He left behind his wife, Myrtle, and two sons and two daughters.
