The Hercílio Luz Futebol Clube is a Brazilian football club from Tubarão in the state of Santa Catarina . He was named in reminiscence of the multiple governor of the state and Brazilian senator Hercílio Pedro da Luz (1860-1924). The mascot is a lion, which is why the club is known as the “Lion of the South” (Leão do Sul).
history
Hercílio Luz is the oldest football club in Tubarão. He played his first game on February 12, 1919 against a team from the Clube Náutico Francisco Martinelli from Florianópolis , which he won 2-1. In 1957 he was the first club from Tubarão to win the State Championship of Santa Catarina and as the title holder in 1958, he was the first club to represent the state in Brazil's first national championship competition in 1959 , from which he was eliminated after two defeats against Athletico Paranaense .
Reaching the semifinals of the state championship in 1972 marked the last major success in club history and in the new millennium he was largely in the lower class at the state level. After his return to the first state league in 2017, he was able to hold the class there for his centenary in 2018 and qualify for participation in the Série D of the Brazilian championship of 2019. At the same time, the club reached the final of the Copa Santa Catarina in 2018 , losing to Brusque FC on penalties .
The oldest local rival was EC Ferroviário , founded in 1944 , which was dissolved in 1992 and replaced by the newly founded Tubarão FC . With Atlético Tubarão , founded in 2005 , this rivalry was expanded.
