history

A windmill had stood on the foundry bastion since around 1815 , which was destroyed by fire in 1832. In 1833 a windmill was built on the same site by master mill builder Berend Erling. It has been owned by the city of Bremen since 1889. It was restored in 1898 and 1950 after it was damaged by fire or war. The mill operated as a grain mill until 1947. In 1998 it was completely renovated according to the specifications of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and the wing and gallery were renewed and the lower two floors were converted into a restaurant.

Construction, technology

Herdentorswallmühle, side view

The Herdentorswallmühle is a gallery Dutch type windmill with a five-storey, octagonal substructure made of clinker bricks. The four louvre blades have a diameter of 24 meters and are equipped with airbrakes for speed regulation. The wind direction tracking is done automatically by a compass rose. The mill has three operational stone grinding stages . A bag box is used to sieve the flour. The mill is also equipped with an elevator , a peeling machine and a wind sweep .

Tourism

The Herdentor is located on the footpath from the main train station to the city center and therefore offers many visitors the surprising sight of a large, intact windmill in the green corridor of the ramparts directly in the city. The mill is one of the city's most frequently photographed sights. But also many people from Bremen have an emotional anchor point in this sight, especially if they live far away.

There is a café / restaurant in the mill. The mill rotates at least three times a week and can be visited on special occasions (mill day) and by arrangement. It is station 41 on the Lower Saxony Mühlenstraße .
