history

From 1945 the population of the city of Lüneburg grew by leaps and bounds, accordingly the two existing high schools Johanneum and Wilhelm-Raabe-Schule had to accept considerably more students. As a result, the school association Höhere Privatschule Lüneburg was founded on July 20, 1950 .

The private school was initially housed in changing buildings in the city and was finally relocated to a farmhouse in the Lüneburg district of Ochtmissen (an independent municipality until 1974). Due to the increasing number of pupils, additional rooms were rented in the city area (at Lüner Damm 12) in 1954. In order to bundle the lessons at one location, refugee barracks were bought from Neetze between 1955 and 1956 and rebuilt in Ochtmissen.

In 1959 the city of Lüneburg took over the sponsorship of the school, so the Herderschule was no longer a private school. The former school association Höhere Privatschule Lüneburg grew into the association of parents and friends of the Herderschule eV In 1967, construction of the school building, which is still in use today, began at Ochtmisser Kirchsteig 27 in Lüneburg. It was opened on August 1, 1969 and completely replaced the Ochtmissen location. Since 2004, due to lack of space in the main building, the classes of the 9th year have been accommodated in the building of the Christianischule (secondary school) on Kreideberg.

The location on Ochtmisser Kirchsteig has since been expanded and extensively renovated.

principal

So far, the Herderschule has had the following principals:

  • 1950–1970 Friedrich Biens
  • 1970–1977 Helmut Brückner
  • 1978–1999 Linus Hornig
  • 1999-2005 Horst Homburg
  • 2005-2014 Michaela Tauffenbach
  • 2014–2016 Hans-Christian Höhne (provisional)

school-building

Today the school is housed in a connected building complex, which is divided into several parts. The main building is a three-story flat-roof building in which most of the classrooms, specialist rooms as well as administration, the school canteen and a library ( self-study center ) are housed. The main building encloses a large inner courtyard planted with trees and bushes.

On the south side there is a single-storey flat roof building, which is located on the level of the first basement of the main building due to the sloping terrain. This area houses the music rooms, a work room, a gymnastics hall and a sports hall.

The auditorium of the Herderschule is located directly on Ochtmisser Kirchsteig, including a cellar for bicycles, a bicycle workshop and the caretaker's apartment.

In 2004, as a reaction to the abolition of the orientation level in Lower Saxony, an extension was built for the additional grades 5 and 6 to be included. It includes eight classrooms.

Furnishing

In addition to universally usable classrooms, the Herderschule is equipped with various specialist rooms. This includes two music rooms, two art rooms, a work room with an attached workshop, two chemistry rooms, two physics rooms, two biology rooms, a science room that can be used across disciplines and a computer room. There are two sports halls (a gymnastics hall and a gym) and a school canteen. The auditorium of the Herderschule is used for various in-school and extra-curricular events and for teaching the performing arts department.

Redevelopment

In 2002 the windows in the main building were due to be replaced, and significant PCB contamination was found. Some rooms had to be closed for school operations. Bit by bit, almost every area of the school was gutted and renovated. Part of the school yard was converted into an outdoor stage. In this area, an expansion of the existing cafeteria was realized in 2017/2018. The renovation measures have not yet been completed (as of the end of 2018), as no solution has yet been found for the auditorium. The various interest groups are currently discussing the various options such as new construction, renovation or demolition.
