Here We Stand is the second studio album by the Scottish rock band The Fratellis . It was released in June 2008.

In advance

In April 2008, the Fratellis announced that they would release a second album in June - just over a year after their debut. A short time later the date and later the name of the plant was announced on the official website. Singer Jon Fratelli said in advance: " We've definitely gotten tougher. I hardly recognize the band on the first album. " In an interview with Scotland on Sunday he also said: "In the end, Costello Music didn't sound like us anymore. Usually we're tougher, and the songs we've written now are more like that. "On May 26th, the first single, Mistress Mable , came out .

The album

The UK edition contains 11 tracks, all written by lead singer and guitarist Jon Fratelli (John Lawler).

  1. My friend John
"The most schizophrenic song ever written." - Jon Fratelli
"The opener My Friend John also just rocks forward" - Koelner.de
" My Friend John heralds galloping guitar riffs with a sixties flair ." - Pop report
  2. A Heady Tale
"Maybe it's my favorite song on the album and people love it live. I think it's going to be big and it had a huge impact on the rest of the record." - Jon Fratelli
" A Heady Tale, inspired by The Who , is dynamic and driven by the piano " - Koelner.de
"I'm really proud of how A Heady Tale has turned out. Why has nobody ever taken the chance to work with a bar room piano like this? - Jon Fratelli
  3. Shameless
"I'm pretty proud of the lyrics. It's about looking around and realizing that all the other bands are around 19 - and we're ten years older than them." - Jon Fratelli
" Shameless sounds like a sequel to Chelsea Dagger ." - Pop report
"Tracks like (...) Shamless are reminiscent of honest rock 'n' roll with simple rhythms in the good old what-ever-you-want manner." - Koelner.de
"Songs like Shamless gain party profile every time you listen". - roteraupe.de
  4. Look out Sunshine!
"If Neil Diamond had played at Oasis , it would have probably sounded like Look out Sunshine! - Jon Fratelli
  5. Stragglers Moon
"One of my favorite songs on the album. It's not a single, but you want to listen to it over and over." , "It has the edge of Pink Floyd and the Beatles - Jon Fratelli
  6. Mistress Mable
"This song is total nonsense. So it would have been pointless to shoot a decent video.", "Lyrically it's the only song that is total nonsense." - Jon Fratelli
"(...) runs nicely in the background when cleaning and rinsing, but doesn't dig any traces in the ear canals, as the single Mistress Mable excellently demonstrates." - whiskey-soda.de
"The first single Mistress Mable (...) convinces with hard guitar riffs and bar room piano sounds. - Koelner.de
"The first single, Mistress Mable , will be a delight for any classic rock fan." - Pop report
" Mistress Mable wouldn't have been my pick for the first single. But I can understand why the label made that decision. It saved her on the safe side." - Jon Fratelli
"The only point of light in the whole Here-We-Stand affair is that the first single, Mistress Mable, has at least beautiful piano passages." - motor.de
  7. Babydoll
"It's not the strongest I've ever written, but the melody catches your ear." - Jon Fratelli
    "Schunkelnder Folk-Song" - Pop-Report
"Only with Babydoll you have to admit: Wow, a whole record of it and the world would be saved. Not just the summer!" - whiskey-soda.de
  8. Tell me a lie
"This is a swipe at me and the press. We have told so many lies lately because we were too lazy to tell the truth. I regret it. Anyone who can think has noticed that we have been telling bullshit." The song is a confession. But it doesn't sound like that because it's a great rock song. It's the heaviest we've made so far. " - Jon Fratelli
"With Tell me a Lie there is a bit of glam rock again ." - Koelner.de
"An outlier from the tried and tested scheme (is) Tell me a Lie , which is chased away by furious rhythm changes with heavy metal riffs." - Pop report
  9. Acid jazz singer
"I was excited when I wrote this. I'm proud of the lyrics." - Jon Fratelli
  10. Magnifying Glass Brown
"That's another one that I knew would be good. It's the most singable chorus we've ever played." - Jon Fratelli
  11. Milk and Money
"When I wrote, I thought it wasn't for us, even though I thought it was damn good. Mince and Baz persuaded me to take it after all and I'm glad about it.", "It's the perfect ending and a strong finish. The counterpart to Henrietta . " - Jon Fratelli .
"Something like trying a mini prog symphony ." - Pop report

Influences

Many influences from other bands have been attributed to the album in the media. So among others The Who , Status Quo and Led Zeppelin . The Fratellis themselves name Pink Floyd and The Beatles as inspirations. Singer Jon Fratelli describes The White Stripes as the "best band in the world" .

Reviews

The reviews of the album were generally positive, but many critics were disappointed with the debut album Costello Music . The band's significant change in style was widely criticized.

  • "What Here We Stand has in common with its predecessor is the unrestrained love of melodies in all songs. A self-contained good-mood work with tumultuous fun melodies" - sallys-net.de
  • "On Here We Stand, The Fratellis sound a bit like Green Day . A simple pop album that plays fresh, happy, free and somehow inexperienced and that has some nice songs, melodies and riffs in store, but is not really overwhelming." - roteraupe.de
  • "Driving rock paired with maximum catchiness is the trio's recipe for success. This time, however, the entourage of 11 songs shifts a little too much into the middle of the street. The storm and stress of the surprising debut remain a bit on the track." - Pop report
  • "The listener at Here We Stand has to forego impetuous compositions à la Flathead or Chelsea Dagger for uninhibited shouting or dancing along - The Fratellis seem to have matured." - Koelner.de
  • "The Fratellis remain the Fratellis, but do not rely on their trademark, the Lalala and Döpdöpdöp Singalong Choirs, but have filled up on Led Zeppelin energy and are increasingly relying on riffs and great guitar melodies" - Hamburger Abendblatt
  • "Two years after the debut album" Costello Music ", this is the second work by the Scottish pub-rock trio, this time self-produced. At festivals, the guys will clear away again and the beer-drinker group will discover new singing hits. Otherwise there are a few more guitars and those musical role models from the sixties come even more to the fore. Well… "- Jürgen König, Soundcheck - radio Eins
