Hereford United was an English football club from Hereford , which last played in the English Conference National , the fifth highest English division. The club's nickname was The Whites ( German for  the whites ) or The Bulls (for German for  the bulls ) after the club's heraldic animal.

history

In 1924, the club was created from a merger of two amateur clubs from Hereford, which hoped for better sporting results. The newly formed club became a member of the Birmingham Combination League. In 1928 they became a member of the Birmingham & District League .

From 1939 to 1972 Hereford United played in the Southern League, in which the club twice achieved second place and after the split in North-Western and South-Eastern Southern League twice could reach the final of the overall championship of the Southern League.

In 1972 the club received a place in the Football League, which was mainly based on the excellent performance in the previous FA Cup . In the first year, he was promoted from the fourth division to the third division, which was won in 1976. After only one year in the Second Division, however, they were relegated again and thus achieved the highest ranking in English professional football with the second highest English division.

By 1979, he was relegated to the fourth league, a return failed in the playoffs in 1985 and 1996. After financial problems, a year later, due to the necessary player sales, he was relegated to amateur football. It wasn't until late that they reported back with 2nd place in the National Conference and the associated rise in professional football. There they even managed to get promoted to third-rate Football League One in 2008 , but only one year later they returned to fourth-rate.

In 2012 they were relegated from professional football to the English fifth division, the Conference National.
