Low German family name, arose from the personal name Herold or Herhold (t), whose genitive form was used to denote the son or fatherhood ( patronymic ), with the Germanic root Hari (Got. Harijis) = Ahd. Army . In Tacitus for the first time as lat.-germ. Name of the Batavian prince Chariovalda mentioned. It has not been clarified whether the name Chariovalda (Germ. Hariowald = " governing in the army") is a personal name or the general name of the Batavians for their military leaders. Later, the family name Her (h) old (t) s was "Verbochdeutscht" to Herholz (see Helmold - Helmholtz , Fromolt - Frommholtz etc.).
