Hermann Horrix was the first of four children of the main teacher Johannes Horrix (1831-1904) and his wife Maria Lucia Horrix, geb. Gartz. From 1876 to 1879 he completed the teachers' seminar in Kempen . He then taught at the elementary school in Hagenbroich-Süchteln. After Horrix had passed the second teacher examination in 1881, he initially worked as a teacher at elementary schools in Düsseldorf . On April 1, 1888, in the latter city, he took over the new one-class auxiliary school for the less gifted on Kreuzstrasse, later on Bismarckstrasse. Over the years, he expanded the educational establishment into a six-tier facility, which he headed from 1911 to 1924 as rector. Horrix set up other auxiliary school classes in districts of Düsseldorf. In the summer of 1895 he took part in a training course for language therapy teachers, which was conducted by Albert Gutzmann and his son Hermann Gutzmann . Until then he had privately taught students with language difficulties. In the period from 1906 to 1909 Horrix was responsible for several training and advanced training courses for auxiliary school teachers. From 1909 to 1913 he led several auxiliary school teacher courses on behalf of the city of Düsseldorf, which were followed by speech therapy courses, listening and vision courses. He was commissioned several times to treat stuttering and stammering soldiers with speech therapy. Horrix was active as a journalist and gave many lectures on the educational role of the auxiliary school. For his services he received the Königl. Order of the Crown, fourth class. In 1924 Horrix retired and devoted himself to Grefrath local history.

Horrix suddenly died of a stroke on January 17, 1930. He was buried in Kempen with great sympathy from the auxiliary school teachers and many former students.

In 1965, the city of Düsseldorf named the newly built auxiliary / special needs school on Suitbertusstraße after Horrix and the Viersen district honored him in 1998 with the minting of a commemorative medal.
