Albert Wehrhahn (born September 11, 1848 in Hessisch Oldendorf ; † April 1, 1942 in Hanover ) was a German educator and school administrator who was one of the pioneers of the special education system . Together with Heinrich Kielhorn he was at the head of the "Association of German Aid Schools" founded in Hanover in 1898 .

Life

Christoph Karl Albert Wehrhahn was the son of the municipal tax collector of Hessisch Oldendorf, at that time the Schaumburg district in the Electorate of Hesse . He attended high schools in Rinteln and Bad Hersfeld , where he graduated from high school in 1870. He completed his studies in theology and the modern languages ​​in Marburg and Leipzig in 1873 with a theological examination.

After traveling through England, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland, he turned his interest to teaching. In 1875 he received his doctorate at the University of Rostock with the thesis "Hessisch Oldendorf and his battlefields". In the same year he was employed at the higher citizen school in Hanover, first as an assistant teacher, then in 1878 as a "full" teacher after he had acquired the teaching qualifications for French, English, geography and history in Göttingen . He married Marie Eugenie Karoline Eysell, the daughter of the Hanover high school director Georg Friedrich Eysell. In 1890 Wehrhahn became city ​​school inspector , in 1894 city school councilor with official supervision of the primary schools in Hanover and in 1910 a member of the magistrate.

Act

Wehrhahn modernized the elementary schools by z. B. abolished the separation of girls and boys in school yards, encouraged the construction of gyms and school gardens and enforced the appointment of school doctors, the introduction of swimming lessons, holiday camps and lunches for needy children. In 1898, teachers and school inspectors in Hanover founded the Association of Aid Schools in Germany in order to design and distribute the existing auxiliary facilities as special schools according to the auxiliary school concept developed by Heinrich Kielhorn in Braunschweig . Albert Wehrhahn was elected first chairman, Heinrich Kielhorn his deputy. The association published the magazine Die Kinder Fehler, which was later renamed Die Hilfsschule and after the " Gleichschaltung " in 1934 in the magazine Die deutsche Sonderschule . Wehrhahn remained chairman until 1924, then honorary chairman.

In the Schaumburg region , Wehrhahn was also valued as a local researcher, especially because of the local historical writing "Hessisch Oldendorf and his battlefields". When the " Battle of Hessisch Oldendorf " celebrated its 250th anniversary in 1883, Wehrhahn supported the local festival committee, which, under the leadership of his brothers Carl and Louis, undertook to erect a memorial to commemorate the battle of the Thirty Years' War and a memorial lasting several days To organize celebration. He wrote a commemorative publication, the sale of which could almost entirely finance the monument.

Honors

  • On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Battle of Hessisch Oldendorf, the 84-year-old received the honorary citizenship of his hometown in 1933.
  • A special school (now closed) in Hanover, Wörthstrasse 10-13, was called the "Albert Wehrhahn School".
  • Also in Hanover, the street "Wehrhahnhof" was dedicated to the former city school council and this name was placed on the "List of street names to be retained".
