Hermann Josef Dörpinghaus

Hermann Josef Dörpinghaus (born August 9, 1937 in Wipperfürth ) is a German librarian . He was Deputy Library Director of the Freiburg University Library and Chief Library Director of the Heidelberg University Library .

Life

Dörpinghaus first studied law, but then history and German in Cologne and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1964 he passed the examination for teaching at grammar schools there. From 1966 to 1969 he was a research assistant with a teaching position at the chair for modern and recent history at this university. In 1969 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD and joined the academic service of the Freiburg University Library.

From 1979 he was Deputy Library Director of the Freiburg University Library until he moved to Heidelberg University Library as Chief Library Director in 1991 and retired in 2001. In 1990 the Freiburg library started electronic cataloging in the Southwest German Library Network. During his term of office in Heidelberg, the entire internal service was comprehensively renovated and rationalized. Innovative internet-based information and communication services were set up, which secured the library a top position in the German library system as a modern IT competence center. The development of the unique old Heidelberg holdings of manuscripts, incunabula and bequests was started and presented to the public in representative exhibitions.

Dörpinghaus was a member of numerous specialist committees and working groups in the German library system. On his 60th birthday he was honored with the commemorative publication Order and System . Four years later, in 2001, he was awarded the University Medal for his “special services” to the library.
