Hermann Lanz (born November 30, 1910 , † January 11, 1998 ) was an Austrian engineer, glider pilot and internationally known coin dealer.

life and work

Hermann Lanz studied at the Technical University of Graz machinery, and the University of Graz physics and education. From 1942 he was chief engineer at the chair for internal combustion engines at the Graz University of Technology. Already at this time he became an active member of the Akaflieg and participated in the construction of various gliders. After the Second World War, while any technical and aviation activity was strictly forbidden by the Allied occupation forces, he prepared the establishment of a new Akaflieg with rescued aircraft. This became known through an article in the study guide 1945/6. Official inquiries have started; Hermann Lanz released from service at the Technical University.

It was during this time that the Numismatik Lanz coin dealership was founded on April 1, 1947 in Graz. After just a few years she was so well known in the international coin trade that Hermann Lanz was able to become a founding member of the international coin dealers association IAPN in 1951 . In 1953, Hermann Lanz was responsible for the re-establishment of Akaflieg as a member of the board. In 1957 Lanz merged the Academic Aviation Groups of Austria (Vienna, Graz, Leoben and Linz) to form the Association of Academic Aviation Groups of Austria and headed the organization as President. In the same year he was academically rehabilitated and took over teaching duties at the Higher Technical Federal Teaching and Research Institute in Graz-Gösting. In 1964 he received the professorship there.

In 1997, Lanz personally opened the exhibition of his important coin collection of Celtic coins in Berlin. The catalog of the Lanz Collection was published in the same year. Hermann Lanz died on January 11, 1998.
