Hermann Ohlsen

Hermann Ohlsen (born March 18, 1916 , † March 22, 1990 in Hessisch-Oldendorf ) was a German architectural photographer.

Ohlsen, an autodidact, mainly photographed new buildings, such as industrial complexes, apartment buildings, churches, streets and bridges. Ohlsen received the orders from the architects Max Säum , Hans Budde , Bernhard Wessel , Carsten Schröck and others, who used the photos for their reference folders. Ohlsen concentrated on the artistic representation of the objects. The high quality of his photos, especially the craftsmanship, the choice of perspective and the lighting, secured him recognition and orders. Ohlsen's tasks often also included the documentation of the construction of the structures.

In his creative period from 1953 to 1984 he created around 12,000 photographs. About a third of the negatives are in large format (9 cm × 12 cm), the rest in medium (6 cm × 6 cm) and small format (24 mm × 36 mm). The proportion of color negatives is barely 300 pieces.

Ohlsen's photo archive had been in a boiler room without being used since 1990. In 2017 the archive was bought and recovered. The negatives, positives and all rights of use became the property of the Bremen State Archives and the publisher Peter Kurz Bremen.
