Hermann Pieper (agricultural scientist)

Hermann Pieper (born October 17, 1881 in Wilhelmseichen near Wirsitz , Province of Posen , † February 16, 1954 in Leutewitz ) was a German seed researcher.

Life

Pieper studied agriculture in Munich and Jena and received his doctorate in 1909 under Wilhelm Edler with a dissertation on the germination of grass seeds. Since then he has worked as a scientific assistant to Bruno Steglich in the agricultural department of the plant physiological research station in Dresden. In 1924 he was appointed department head and deputy director with the title of professor at the Agricultural Research Institute in Dresden . In 1939 he was retired. Until 1946 he worked as a practical farmer, then as a seed breeding manager at the Leutewitz seed breeding estate near Meißen.

His main focus was on seed production, seed processing and seed testing. Pieper was one of the most competent seed experts of his time. In a manual that was published twice, he has presented all sub-areas of the seed industry in a clear and understandable form. In addition, he dealt with problems of weed control and the breeding improvement of agricultural crops.
