Documentary series " Up and Away" from Swiss television

Hermann Schönbächler's family became well known in German-speaking Switzerland in 2011 thanks to the emigrant documentary “Up and Away” on the TV program “DOK” . These episodes were awarded the Swiss Television Prize in 2012. In early 2010, the then four-member family emigrated to Rosswood near Terrace in the Canadian province of British Columbia and was accompanied by a camera team. The documentary season was a success thanks to the simple and honest manner of the Schönbächler family. An excerpt from the series, in which Schönbächler's five-year-old son Richi fell out of an excavator and cried, became a hit on YouTube . This scene with the father's reproachful saying “ Richiii! I hate, you would have so good! »Was processed and parodied in different variations. Due to the public interest, the Schönbächler family was the only family to be accompanied in the following season of this documentary.

In November 2012 the book Pretty Wild was published , which also portrays the life of the emigrant family. The first edition was sold out after two months and had to be reprinted. In the bestseller list of the Swiss book trade , on February 10, 2013 , Tender Wild came first in the non-fiction category.

In April 2016, Hermann Schönbächler and his family were naturalized and were able to receive the Canadian passport.
