Hermann of Munster
Hermann von Münster (* around 1330; † March 1392 in Metz ) was a Gothic glass painter . He probably came from Münster in Westphalia . With him, French Gothic stained glass reached its artistic and technical climax.
Hermann is the first glass painter to be mentioned by name in the archives of the cathedral chapter of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Metz. On August 29, 1381, he received a payment of £ 22 for the execution of a window. The window was a donation from Cardinal William Aigrefeuille, a legate of the antipope Clement VII. In 1384 there were negotiations between a commission of the cathedral chapter and Hermann about payments for the execution of the great rose in the Metz cathedral. The iconography of the rose, which has a diameter of 11 meters, follows a theological pictorial program that places prophets of the Old Testament and the apostles of the New Testament in a typological context.
In 1388 Hermann von Metz bought a house on the "Place de Chambre". He died there in March 1392. The canons of Metz granted him the right to be buried in the cathedral. An epitaph in the first chapel of the north aisle bears the inscription:
CI DEVANT GIST
MAISTRE HARMAN LI VALRIER
DE MUNSTERE AN WAILTEFALLE,
ET FIST LE GRANT OZ DE CEANS,
QUI MORUT LE JOR DE LA NOSTRE DAME
EN MARS M.CCC.IIIIXX et XII.
translated accordingly: Master Hermann the glass painter / from Münster in Westphalia rests here / [...] who died on the day of Our Lady in March 1392
