Hermann von Marienstatt , (* 1150 ; † after 1225 in Himmerod Monastery ) was a Cistercian monk and the founder abbot of Heisterbach Monastery and the Marienstatt Abbey .

Live and act

Hermann von Marienstatt was born in the Rhineland in 1150. He was a canon at the monastery of St. Cassius and Florentius in Bonn, before joining the Cistercian abbey of Himmerod , probably in 1175 . " When the Archbishop of Cologne, Philipp von Heinsberg, offered the Cistercians the property of an Augustinian canons' estate on the Stromberg - today's Petersberg in the Siebengebirge - as a foundation, monks from Himmerod under the leadership of Hermann as the founding abbot took over the succession in 1189 Former monastery. Because of the unfavorable mountain location, the convent soon moved to the nearby valley of the Heisterbach (1192–99), from which the new abbey took the name Heisterbach (1193). "

In 1195 he returned to Himmerod, from where he planned to found the Marienstatt Abbey . A foundation of the Cologne burgrave Eberhard von Aremberg and his wife Adelheid von Molsberg made the foundation of Marienstatt near Neunkhausen possible in 1212 . Due to inheritance disputes and the geographically unfavorable location, they did not stay there for long and, thanks to a foundation by the Counts of Sayn, founded the Marienstatt monastery in the valley on the Nister under Abbot Hermann in 1222. Herrmann is mentioned as the founding abbot in the Marienstatter documents. A legend is ascribed to Hermann in connection with the founding of Marienstatt:

“The Mother of God appeared to Abbot Hermann in a dream and pointed out a hawthorn bush blooming in the middle of winter as a new monastery location. Associated with this is the naming "locus Sanctae Mariae" - Place of Mary: Marienstatt. As a reminder of this wonderful event, the abbey added a flowering branch of hawthorn to its coat of arms. "

An offshoot of the hawthorn can still be seen in Marienstatt today. The processes relating to the change of location were recorded on the " Marienstatter Tafeln ", the certificate for the consecration of the church on December 27, 1324. These are now in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum (Bonn).

Abbot Hermann is mentioned again in a document in 1225. He then returned to the Himmerod monastery , where he died after 1225.
