The Heron Passage is a strait in the Willis Islands group off the north-western tip of South Georgia . It runs between the islands of Vaughan Island and Trinity Island .
The existence of the passage, known since the 1930s, was confirmed in 1961 during survey work with the British research ship HMS Owen . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1964 after the name of one of the HMS Owen's motorized dinghies used for surveying .
