The Herrain castle hill is a landmark of Schupfart , a community in the Rheinfelden district of the Swiss canton of Aargau . It is located on the northern edge of the old village center. There are four linden trees on the hill and when these are in the leaves , they give the impression that there is only one large linden tree.
Research assumes that Herrain is a medieval wood and earth castle , also called a motte . The imposing fortification consists of a conical castle hill in the center and a lower terrace in the south. The entire system was artificially carved out of the mountainside by hand and filled up. The Schupfart moth is unique in the canton of Aargau and the Herrain is an archaeological monument of national importance.
