Herrchen wanted was an animal show on hr television .

In the half-hour program, mostly cats and dogs , but also other pets from animal shelters were shown . In particular, animals that were difficult to convey and that were particularly dependent on a presence on television were presented.

In 1975 the program was initially included in the program as a break filler. Later developed herrchen sought as a control program with double-digit market share. The program was moderated by Barbara Siehl for 30 years . In summer 2005 Miriam Deforth took over the moderation.

After several channel changes, the number of viewers decreased. On December 6, 2008, the program was canceled due to an alleged lack of response. The television director spoke of an average of 3.9 percent market share. The withdrawal met with criticism in particular from the animal shelters involved. As a replacement for the format, the weekly column "My new friend" was added to the program in the hr tabloid magazine maintower .
