Life

Krog published her first poems in her school newspaper in 1969 at the age of 17 and thus caught the attention of the South African press, which panned the texts for their stance against apartheid . Her first volume of poetry was published the following year.

She received her BA in Afrikaans , English and Philosophy from the University of the Orange Freestate and her Masters in Afrikaans from the University of Pretoria . She also graduated as a teacher from the University of South Africa .

After her studies she worked as a journalist and edited the independent magazine Die Suid-Afrikaan . Among other things, she wrote nine volumes of poetry, two collections of poetry for children and a collection of short stories.

Her best-known work is the multi-award-winning, semi-fictional nonfiction book Country of My Skull about the South African Truth Commission , which dealt with the crimes of the apartheid regime. It was filmed in 2004 by John Boorman with Juliette Binoche and Samuel L. Jackson in the leading roles. She also accompanied the work of the commission as a journalist and gave lectures on this topic at universities in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, the USA and Canada.

She writes in Afrikaans, her books are translated into English and so far six other European languages. She herself translated Nelson Mandela's autobiography Long Walk to Freedom and Henk van Woerden's Een mond vol glas into Afrikaans. Essays have been published in German translation in the cultural magazine Lettre International .

In 2006, the South African writer and literature professor Stephen Watson voiced allegations of plagiarism and accused Krog of having copied the texts and translations of several other authors. Krog denied the allegations.
