The University of the Free State ( Afrikaans : Universiteit van die Vrystaat ; English : University of the Free State ) - UFS , UV or Kovsie for short - is a state university in the South African city ​​of Bloemfontein , the capital of the Free State province , and in Phuthaditjhaba in the east of the Free State.

history

The Free State University was founded as Gray College in 1904 and had six students at the time. After its first degrees in 1905, the institution became known as Gray University College (GUC), and in 1910 the Free State officially awarded it the title of educational institution. Afrikaans became the university language at the end of the 1940s, and at the same time the university renamed itself to Universiteitskollege van die Oranje-Vrystaat . In 1950 it was recognized as a university by the South African parliament and was named Universiteit van die Oranje-Vrystaat (UOVS); it has had its current name since 2001. UFS has been offering lectures and degrees in both Afrikaans and English since 1993.

Course offer and fees

At the UFS there are over 190 undergraduate courses that lead to a Bachelor or Diploma . A distinction is made between master’s , magister’s , honors degree and doctorate in the further study programs . There are a total of around 300 possible degrees, of which roughly the same number of master's, master's and doctoral programs.

The University of the Free State charges tuition fees and fees. Applicants must fall 165-245 edge of, for a place 3,090 to 7,775 margin, subject to completion and accommodation. The annual tuition fees depend on the course and range between 16,000 and 20,000 Rand (as of 2011).

Management and committees

The university is run by a rectorate that includes the rector and vice-chancellor, three vice-rectors and an examining officer. The Chancellor is the highest representative in charge of the University for the award of degrees, he is elected for five years. Management is the responsibility of the University Council, which together with the Senate Committee and the Executive Committee determines the guidelines and is responsible for financial planning and academic affairs.

The UFS is located on three campus areas. On the Bloemfontein Campus (28,800 students) in the city center, the South Campus (870 students), the former Vista Campus in the south of the city and the Qwaqwa Campus (4,300 students) in Phuthaditjhaba .
