HMS Active

So far, eleven ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Active , named after the English word for active:

  • The first HMS Active was a 28-gun 6th class ship launched in 1758 and captured by the French in 1778 during the American Revolutionary War off Saint-Domingue .
  • The second HMS Active was a 14-gun sloop launched in 1776 , which was captured by the Americans in 1780 off New York .
  • The third HMS Active , a 12-gun cutter , was taken in 1779 in the English Channel by the French cutter Le Mutin as a prize .
  • The fourth HMS Active was a 5th class frigate with 32 guns. It was put into service in 1780 and suffered an accident on the St. Lawrence River in 1796 .
  • The fifth HMS Active was a 14-gun sloop that appeared in the ship lists in 1782.
  • The sixth HMS Active was again built as a 5th class frigate with 38 cannons in 1799 . In 1833 she was renamed HMS Argo and scrapped in 1860.
  • The seventh HMS Active was again a 5th class frigate , this time with 36 cannons, launched in 1845. The ship was renamed twice in 1867, namely in July in HMS Tyne and in November in HMS Durham ; It was sold in 1908.
