Location of the Hertenrits area

The Hertenrits nature reserve is located in Suriname , in the Nickerie district , north of Wageningen .

The nature reserve on the west coast was founded in 1972 and, with an area of ​​around 100 hectares, is the smallest reserve in Suriname. It mainly serves to protect the settlement mounds artificially made from earth by the Hertenrits Indians . The first terps , consisting of various layers, were created in the 8th century and are of particular importance from an archaeological point of view.
