The Herthainsel (also known as Hertha-Nunatak ) is an island off the Nordenskjöld coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 8 km east of Robertson Island in the Seal Islands group .
It was discovered in December 1893 by Carl Anton Larsen , whose expedition was financed by the Hamburg company Woltereck & Robertson. It was named after one of the ships on the expedition, the Hertha . Larsen recognized the elevation as an "island", while Otto Nordenskjöld , who explored the region in 1902, referred to the entire archipelago as Nunatakker because of its location within the Larsen Ice Shelf . The ice shelf there has been disintegrating since 1995, however, and the islands lie in the now ice-free Weddell Sea .
