The Sacred Heart Basilica (Polish: Bazylika Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa ) in Krakow is a Catholic church at ul. Mikołaja Kopernika 26 in the Wesoła district .

history

inner space

The Jesuits took over the property in 1868 and built the first chapel on this site until 1870. In 1889 the altar was completed.

The current construction began in 1909 and was completed in 1912. However, as the interior construction stalled due to the First World War, the church was not consecrated until 1921.

The church was built in the modern style with numerous elements from the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque periods. The Art Nouveau mosaics go back to Jan Bukowski , Piotr Stachiewicz and Leonard Stroynowski and the stone carvings to Xawery Dunikowski and Karol Hukan . Franciszek Mączyński created the neo-renaissance altar .

The 65 meter high church tower is crowned by a neo-renaissance helmet.

In 1960 the church was opened by Pope Paul VI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica .
