Sacred Heart Church in Pforzheim

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Pforzheim in Baden-Württemberg is a Catholic church that was built in 1928/29.

history

After the Church of St. Francis, consecrated in 1891, had sufficed for the Catholic community in Pforzheim for a few decades , it had become too small in the 1920s. In 1925, a separate parish curate was set up for the faithful south of the Enz , from which the later Sacred Heart Congregation emerged. The barefoot church initially served as a place of worship . In 1926 the community built the St. Elisabeth branch on the Buckenberg, and in 1927 a further branch was added in Würm . The community then acquired the site of the former Enzschule and an adjacent plot of land on the Enz for the construction of a new church. Because of its cramped location and surrounded on three sides by tall buildings, the site was certainly not ideal for a new church, but it also influenced the architectural design of the church, which was planned by church builder Otto Linder from Stuttgart.

The foundation stone for the church was laid on September 16, 1928, after a construction period of around one year, the church and the attached rectory were completed on October 19, 1929. Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Burger consecrated the church on November 3, 1929. In 1933 the Sacred Heart of Jesus Congregation was elevated to a city parish.

During the air raid on Pforzheim on February 23, 1945, the church was destroyed except for the tower and the foundation walls. The tower with the massive cross, which towered over the destroyed city of Pforzheim, was considered the "grave cross of the city".

In 1946, architect Linder began planning the reconstruction of the church, the ruins of which were provisionally used for services. A setback occurred in December 1947 when the preserved crypt , which was used for church services, was flooded by a flood up to a height of 1.60 meters. On June 21, 1948, one day after the currency reform, the final reconstruction began, which was completed by 1951. On June 10, 1951, the church was consecrated again by Auxiliary Bishop Burger.

The Catholics on the Buckenberg were part of the Herz-Jesu-Gemeinde and received their own St. Elisabeth church in 1957 .

In 1972 an extensive renovation of the church began, which dragged on in several stages until 1975 and the most complex step was a complete redesign of the choir room. From 1974 onwards a number of thefts occurred in the church, which led to the church being temporarily closed except for the times of worship.

description

The church is solidly built from golden brown Cannstatter travertine . The crucifixion group above the portal was created by Edward Mürrle from Pforzheim.
