The Herzog-Johann-Hospital ( Danish Hertug Hans Hospitalet ) is a post-Reformation foundation in the northern Schleswig town of Hadersleben . It is located just south of the old town outside the mill gate. It was created in 1569 when the then sovereign Duke Johann the Elder amalgamated the assets of several medieval foundations. The Hospital Church is now a Protestant parish church for the southern part of the city.

history

Little is known about the history of Hadersleben's monasteries, but there was a Franciscan monastery and a Jürgenshof for lepers outside the city. In 1569, the duke founded the new hospital to take care of the needy from the city. In addition to the assets of the predecessor foundations, this also received the property of the dissolved collegiate chapter at the Marienkirche of the city. This also included lands and some farms in the Hadersleben area. Mayor, bailiff and provost acted as board members.

Immediately after the foundation, the new building was erected south of the city. In 1726 this was rebuilt. The coats of arms and the following plaque on the west facade commemorate the founder:

The church now makes up the east wing of the building. Since 1969 it has had a roof turret as a bell carrier again. The church and hospital were extensively renovated by 2006. Today the church serves as an annex church to the Marienkirche and is the parish church for the southern parish. The ancillary buildings now serve the community after the last residents moved out in 1989. Only the southern administrator building is inhabited.

Due to the main road laid out in the 1950s, the hospital is optically cut off from the old town on the other side of the mill stream. The lowering of the building is, however, a consequence of the Hadersleben circular railway line laid here in 1898 , which operated the Hadersleben-Süderbrücke station on the line to Toftlund until 1939 .
