Herzog (also Herzog: Divorce Lawyer on the DVD release ) is a German television series that was broadcast on RTL in 2008 . Niels Ruf can be seen in the main role of the eponymous Simon C. Herzog in one of his few acting performances.

content

The main character of the series is the eponymous divorce lawyer Simon C. Herzog, portrayed by Niels Ruf, who is a clichéd bon vivant for his profession. He loves money and his dog "Bossi", wears bespoke suits and designer watches and drives a Porsche. His father Hagen, himself a lawyer, views him critically: He is of the opinion that his son chose the "simple" field of divorce instead of acting as a criminal lawyer, as it was a late adolescent rebellion against him. Due to his sometimes arrogant, contagious manner, Herzog Junior and his good friend Bernd regularly come into difficult situations, which he can always get out of with skill, while the latter, who works for Herzog Senior, often has to pay for them.

Trivia

The series was canceled by the broadcaster after only 3 episodes and thus suffered the same fate as The Lawyers, who also started at the same time just days before . While the latter later found accommodation with the station Das Erste , the remaining episodes of Herzog were not broadcast on TV. Instead, it was released on DVD.

Publication on DVD

The series was released on DVD on August 21, 2009 by Turbine Medien . The DVD box, which contains two silver discs, contains all 9 episodes produced in the series, as well as audio commentary on three episodes, including the actual pilot episode, a greeting from Niels Ruf at the beginning, outtakes from the shoot, and an interview with Ruf and Christiane Ruff , the then managing director of Sony Pictures Germany, in which she was critical of the status of German TV series at the time.

reception

The series and main character were received differently in the features section. The taz wrote in part: "To oversimplify, the figure is drawn to mechanically says most spells act. For example:" Is the new here. "Father Herzog asks his son" to the tits on, "it responds." Herzog ", especially written by Marko Lucht and Gerd Lurz, relies on continuous fire - and thus takes the punchlines the time they need to ignite. Less would have been more again."

Critics were also confronted with the fact that the series cared little about political correctness , like Ruf itself. An author of the Brigitte said: “He shoots all the time: Against the Catholic Church, this 'crazy sect' and against 'fagots' [sic!], 'Who are even allowed to marry'. He hits women on the backside and reports in the confessional about his fornication. And then there is the thing with the 'negroes'. 'They just smell different,' says Simon's best buddy Bernd. Reason enough for the outrageous lawyer to sniff the nearest colored person he comes across. ”Also,“ there is a [reputation] simply lacking in acting talent. What still had a certain attraction in his shows, that is, the uncompromisingly exposed I-shit-on-your-PC-attitude, just doesn't want to come across in the series. "
