Duke of Châtillon

The title Duke of Châtillon was given by the King of France in 1643. It referred to the lordship of Châtillon-sur-Loing , which was owned by Gaspard III. de Coligny , Comte de Coligny, Marquis d' Andelot , Marshal of France ; the duchy was initially called "Duché de Châtillon sous le nom de Coligny".

Gaspard III. died in 1646, his son Gaspard IV. de Coligny , also Marshal of France, was his successor, who was now Duke of Châtillon (without the addition). A little later the existence of the duchy ended. In November 1648 the king raised the county of Coligny in Bresse to a duchy and a peerage . Gaspard IV. Was Duke of Coligny until his death the following year . His posthumously born son Henri-Gaspard (1649-1657) was also called Duc de Châtillon.

In 1696 Châtillon was raised again to the duchy. The new title holder was Sigismond de Montmorency. He had inherited Châtillon-sur-Loing from his aunt Elisabeth (1627–1695), Gaspard IV's widow. The line died out in 1861 with the 4th Duke.
