Hesselbacher Wallburg

The Hesselbacher Wallburg is a former castle from the La Tène period in Hesselbach ( Bad Laasphe ) in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Geographical location

The Wallburg is located on the 560 m high summit of the Burgberg , west of the Hesselbacher Mühle. Its interior is egg-shaped and extends up to 250 m in length and 120 m in width. The rampart begins in the west and surrounds the inner rampart at a roughly parallel distance, the entire south side almost straight and here at a distance of 90 m around the eastern part of the castle, which has its lowest depth here. The summit from the southwest is secured by two barriers of 40 m and 100 m one behind the other. At the western entrance, the wall coming from the north bends visibly inward, indicating that it is very old. The southern wall end is very wide due to the applied wall. The easiest way to get to the castle is through the east entrance.

Construction and use

The construction and use of the ring wall is dated to the La Tène period or the third century BC. According to popular opinion, it is a refugee castle , which was built by the Celts or Germanic peoples. Between 50 BC Chr. And Chr. Birth the castle was given to the Chatten .

Todays situation

The site has already been examined and recorded, but no archaeological excavations have taken place so far.
