The Hessendenkmal in Linz is a listed building, which can be seen on the southwest corner of the promenade in front of the country house of the Upper Austrian capital. It was built in 1928 and is intended to commemorate the approximately 5,000 fallen soldiers of the kuk infantry regiment No. 14 in the First World War . The plans come from Franz Forster , the executive artist was Leopold Forstner .

history

On September 16, 1928, the Hessian monument was inaugurated on the Linz promenade. The jury selected Franz Forster from the ten available designs. The academic sculptor, who was born in St. Florian, was himself an officer in the Hessians. The Helfenberg granite required for this , which including its construction cost 22,000 Schilling , was provided by Peter Revertera . The money for the construction comes from the members themselves. It is said that the farmer's leader Stefan Fadinger was fatally injured in an exchange of fire during the city siege. On October 15, 2009 the building was placed under monument protection.

construction

The modern-looking monument has a base that was provided with four obliquely stepped struts. An octagonal pillar with three drums grows out of it and extends upwards. While the flattened fields contain references to the regiment's weaponry and the people involved, there is a commemorative inscription on the base with references to his fallen in World War I as well as to the artist of the monument and the stonemason who carried out the work.
