The Hetzemühle also Hetzewindmühle is a post mill in the Leutersdorf district of Hetzwalde in the district of Görlitz . It is the largest surviving post mill in Saxony.

location

The Hetzemühle stands on the edge of Hetzwalde on the Hetzwalder Berg (formerly Löfflerscher Berg).

history

The five-wing mill was built between 1775 and 1780 by the miller Johann Gottfried Eichhorn. In order to increase the output, the mill received a new corrugated head with initially eight blades around 1863, with two blades soon being removed. However, the six-wing mill proved to be too maintenance-intensive and, because of the high air turbulence, did not provide too much performance. The best utilization of the wind conditions was achieved with five blades, so that the mill was rebuilt to its original drive in autumn 1869. The Hetzemüller also ran agriculture on the mill property and, since 1877, a bakery in order to be able to feed their families even in bad times. Since the mid-1920s to 1939 were bonfires held at the agitation mill.

The windmill ceased operations in 1929 and was declared a technical monument in the same year. After the cessation of operations, the mill wings broke in storms, in November 1940 three wings were damaged. In the summer of 1944, four wings were badly damaged by a bomb. Because of the high cost of maintaining the mill, the owners were given permission to demolish, but did not make use of it. In 1955 the Hetzemühle was placed under monument protection again.

After the Second World War, the Hetzwalde volunteer fire brigade and the mill owner Maruselke saved the mill from deterioration until the 1980s. The last surviving mill wing was already in disrepair in the 1960s.

In May 2002 the association Hetzemühle eV was founded, which also revived the tradition of the Midsummer bonfire. The declared aim of the association is to provide the mill with five wings again.

Technical specifications

The Hetzemühle has five wings, two grinders, a squeezer (scrap plant) and an internal elevator.
