The Heumühle in the 4th District in Vienna is a former water mill , which dates back in its present form in the 14th century. The building, called a stone mill until the 17th century, is the second oldest secular building in Vienna after the Berghof in Heiligenstadt .

history

In the 13th century a Mühlbach was created in the Wiental , which branched off from the Wien River at Gumpendorf and was re-introduced at the level of today's Naschmarkt . Three water mills were built on this mill stream: the Heiligengeistmühle (later the bear mill ), the grinding mill, and the stone mill, which later became the hay mill. Bärenmühle and Steinmühle were first mentioned in documents in 1326 as belonging to the manorial estate of the Bürgerspital (also Heiligengeistspital). The building known today as the hay mill was built in the 14th century. Around 1528 it was badly damaged by fire, in 1533 the mill came to the diocese of Vienna under the Roman-German king and later Emperor Ferdinand I. In the same century, several modifications and additions were made. Among other things, the extension with kitchen, bakery and chamber was built. In the centuries that followed, the mill was rebuilt several times, most recently in 1818 when the structure was regotified.

The mill operation was maintained until 1856. In that year, the municipality of Vienna acquired the mill and water rights for 30,000 guilders from the owner, the Archdiocese of Vienna, and had the mill stream shut down and filled up for hygienic reasons. While the bear mill and grinding mill were removed, the structure of the hay mill was retained. Due to construction activity from the 19th century, the mill is now located in the inner courtyard of the residential building at Schönbrunner Strasse 2.

Until the beginning of the 21st century, the privately owned building, which is now a listed building, was largely left to decay. In the course of the revitalization of the surrounding buildings, the historic mill was also subjected to a comprehensive renovation, the costs for this amounted to approx. € 800,000, approx. A quarter was raised from subsidies and grants. With the construction of a passage, the mill has been made accessible to the public again and will be used as part of an event center for culture and social activities.

In Wieden, Heumühlgasse is reminiscent of the mill; The Bärenmühlgang and Schleifmühlgasse are reminiscent of the other two mills on the Mühlbach .
