Hevrin Khalaf ( Kurdish Hevrîn Xelef ; born November 15, 1984 in Rojava ; † October 12, 2019 ibid) was a Kurdish politician and civil engineer in Syria .

Life and political career

From childhood on, Khalaf's life was shaped by political movements and thinkers. Four of her brothers and her sister Zozan were involved in the Kurdish liberation movement and died as a result of political violence.

She finished her studies at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in Aleppo in 2009 . With the beginning of the revolution in Rojava in 2015, she became involved in the freedom movement and for the energy supply in the canton of Cizîre , she became deputy co- chair of the energy committee. In 2016 she joined the YPG / PKK . In 2018, Khalaf was part of the organization and founding of the Future Syria Party (FSP) (Partiya Sûriya Pêşerojê (PSP)), which began with the aim of representing the interests of all social groups and ensuring a democratic new beginning in Syria. She was elected Secretary General.

In her political work, Khalaf attached importance to the equal treatment of all social groups in Syria and stressed the importance of the dialogue between all Syrian political forces. She also campaigned for women's rights and attended the first conference of Arab tribal women in September 2019.

In the wake of the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria in 2019 , Khalaf was killed by militia loyal to Turkey on the M4 motorway on October 12, 2019 when she was being ambushed with a driver to a political meeting north of ar-Raqqa . The driver also died in this incident. According to the French newspaper Le Monde , Hevrin Khalaf was subjected to serious abuse, from which she died. Politically against Khalaf circles disseminated a video recording of this act for propaganda on the Internet. She was buried in al-Malikiyah (Derik).
