HiRes (also hires or HiRes ) is the abbreviation for the term High Resolution (Engl. High resolution ).

Use for computer screens

HiRes was used by computer companies for the screen resolution of their home computers (e.g. Commodore for the C64 or Apple for the Apple II ). As an alternative to HiRes, there was LoRes (Low Resolution).

The screen resolution varied between the individual device manufacturers, but in general the switch from LoRes to HiRes mode meant switching from text mode to graphics mode, which enabled individual pixels to be controlled from individual letter positions (text mode).

With the C64, for example, the resolution is only increased in width from 160 × 200 to 320 × 200 pixels , but there are limits to the color selection.

Use in audio technology

In audio technology ( high fidelity ), HiRes refers to digital music formats that have a sampling rate of at least 96 kHz or a sampling depth of at least 24 bits and thus go beyond the standard compact disc digital audio . Music consumers expect a higher sound quality from this.

From a scientific point of view, however, an audible improvement in sound quality through a higher sampling rate cannot be proven (this follows both from theoretical considerations ( Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem ) and from empirical studies ( blind tests )). The audibility of a sampling depth greater than 16 bits is only given for music with quiet passages that is played back at a very high volume.
