Hiatirhaphis is a genus of the viviparous toothcarps . The distribution area is limited to Costa Rica and western Panama .

features

Hiatirhaphis species have an elongated body and a small head with a rounded snout. Their coloring is simple and, depending on the population, gray, brown, olive or yellowish. The belly is silvery white. The dark edges of the scales form a mesh pattern. The fins are usually more or less yellowish in color. There is no gender difference in terms of coloration. Males 6 become 7 inches long, females 5 to 8 cm.

Systematics

Both Hiatirhaphis species were placed in the genus Gambusia in their first description , later they came to Brachyrhaphis . In 2019 the genus Hiatirhaphis was introduced.
