Brachyrhaphis is a genus of viviparous toothcarps . The distribution area is limited to Costa Rica and the west of Panama . Brachyrhaphis hartwegi occurs in the Mexican state of Chiapas and in Guatemala . The name is derived from the Greek brachy (for short) and rhaphis (for needle) and refers to the sexual organ of the male animals.

features

Brachyrhaphis species are usually brightly colored. The base of the anal fin is often pigmented black, in some species the black color extends to the anal fin in both sexes. The animals are between 3 and 8 cm in size, with males remaining significantly smaller than females. In the aquarium, the fish tend to cannibalize young fish and are usually rude towards alien species.

Systematics

Long time assumed one, brachyrhaphis was an old line of development of live-bearing tooth carp, from which then the modern Gambusia ( Gambusia ) including the Hechtkärpflings ( Belonesox belizanus have developed) and summarized the three genera brachyrhaphis , Gambusia and Belonesox the tribe together Gambusiini.

Recent research places Brachyrhaphis in a separate tribe Brachyrhaphini with a relatively basal position within the viviparous toothcarps.

species

For two other species originally belonging to the genus Brachyrhaphis ( B. cascajalensis and B. parismina ), the genus Hiatirhaphis was introduced in 2019 .
