Higganum Reservoir State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of Haddam Township .

Surname

The name comes from the Indian word "Higganumpus", which roughly means "Big curve in the river". Apparently the name referred to the bend the Connecticut River makes at the tributary of Higganum Creek .

geography

The state park serves to protect the Higganum Reservoir , which is fed by the stream of the same name ( Higganum Creek ) with its tributaries (including Ponset Brook ). The Higganum Creek leaves the reservoir on the north side, joins the Candlewood Hill Brook after a few hundred meters and then with the Bible Rock Brook and flows into the Connecticut River after about one kilometer. The reserve stretches along the river valley from north to south and extends about 700 m to the west, into the foothills of an unspecified hill ( Candlewood Hill ?) On whose plateau the Scovill Reservoir was created. There is a small waterfall at the upper, southern end of the reservoir. Route 9 (Chester Bowles Highway) crosses the reserve on the mountainside for almost the entire length of the park . Close by are Seven Falls State Park (to the north), Municipal Park Town and, further southeast, the Cockaponset State Forest .

history

The dam was built in 1868 by the brothers George M. and Thomas J. Clark, who used water power to power their factory. The Higganum Manufacturing Company (later: Clark Cutaway Harrow ) produced agricultural equipment. In 2003 the dam was renewed and the park established.

free time activities

You can go boating, fishing, hiking and hunting in the park.
