Horse Guard State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the municipality of Avon .
geography
The park protects the swampy headwaters of Chidsey Brooks and also takes over part of the Pondledge Hills range . The park borders Route 167 (West Avon Drive) to the east . The Juniper Road Open Space connects to the northwest . The area is characterized by a number of community and private parks and recreation areas , such as Fisher Meadow Park on the Farmington River , about 3 km to the east and Found Lake Park , about 1 km to the west.
history
The estate of the Derrin family from the beginning of the 18th century was sold after the family died out to a J. Maxon , who was an enthusiastic sulkie-racing athlete and trained his horses on the premises. In 1954 the area was passed to the Connecticut Horse Guard , who found an optimal training area. In 1964 the land was sold to the State of Connecticut.
Trivia
There is now a clothing brand named after the state park. (Horse Guard State Park Connecticut Apparel).
