The Hiletinae are a subfamily of the ground beetles (Carabidae). There are around 20 known species in two genera worldwide that occur in the tropics. The animals are very rare and little researched.
features
The beetles have a large head, which is strongly built in relation to the pronotum . The antennae are kneeled, their scapus is the same length as the second to fourth limb. The scapus can be placed in a groove below the compound eyes. The mandibles are large and sharply curved at the end. Each mandible has eight or nine triangular teeth that grow larger towards the tip. The tarsi of all legs are slender and tapered distally. Adhesive hairs are formed on the first three protarsomeres and the first two mesotarsomeres. The surface of the cover wings is designed differently. The membranous wings (alae) are well developed. On the thorax there are primitive structures such as the process of the prosternum , the indentation of the procoxa and the mesoventrite, as well as more developed structures such as the lobed metepimeron .
The larvae of the Hiletinae are completely unknown.
Way of life and occurrence
The genus Hiletus is widespread in tropical Africa, the genus Eucamaragnathus in Africa, including Madagascar, Southeast Asia and South America east of the Andes from Ecuador to the plains of eastern Brazil. The animals colonize evergreen deciduous and mixed forests with lateritic soils or grassland savannahs with isolated trees .
Systematics
The Hiletinae are divided into the following genera:
