The Hill o 'Many Stanes ( Scots : hill with many stones ) is the largest and best preserved multi-row stone setting in the county of Caithness in northeast Scotland . The rows of small stones are about 4000 years old and lie on the southern slope of a small hill. Around 200 stones in 22 rows run in a fan shape from north to south. In the last few centuries some stones have been lost, originally there were around 600 stones in this complex. It is believed that the rows of stones were used for gatherings or religious ceremonies. You could also use a solar or lunar calendar represent.
