Adel is a city and also the county seat of Cook County in the US state of Georgia with 5334 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Adel is centrally located in Cook County. The neighboring towns are Sparks , Cecil and Lenox . The nearest major city, Albany , is about 96 kilometers northwest, the capital of Georgia, Atlanta , about 329 kilometers north. The urban area extends over an area of ​​20.7 km².

history

It is believed that the first white settlers settled here as early as the 1860s. At the end of the 19th century, the settlement was known as "Puddleville" (from English puddle , puddle ' ), based on the numerous puddles of water that covered the then unpaved streets of the town after a rainfall. According to tradition , the postmaster Joel J. "Uncle Jack" Parrish formed the name "Adel" from the middle letters of Philadelphia (Phil - adel --phia) and proposed it as a new place name. In 1889 the place was raised under a new name, then as part of Berrien County . When Cook County was founded in 1913, Adel was named its county seat .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 5334 inhabitants were distributed among households inhabited in 1986, which results in an average of 2.63 people per household. There are a total of 2368 households.

69.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.14 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 38% of all households and persons aged at least 65 in 27.3% of all households.

29.6% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 25.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 48.1% of the population were male and 51.9% were female.

46.9% of the population identified themselves as whites , 45.4% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 1% as Asian Americans . 5.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.4% to several ethnic groups. 7.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 33,292 USD , while 30.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Public facilities

Adel has two public schools, Cook County High School and Cook Primary School. The city also has a public library and a hospital , the Memorial Hospital of Adel . Reed Bingham State Park in the west of the city is a popular recreational area .

Buildings

The SOWEGA building from 1931, which is known as the Watermelon Building because of its terracotta decorations in the form of watermelons , and the Adel courthouse, which was built in 1938/39, are on the list of cultural monuments of the American federal government .

Adel is crossed by Interstate 75 , US Highway 41, and Georgia State Routes 37 and 76 . The nearest airport is Valdosta Regional Airport (around 45 km south).

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 335 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were two rapes, two robberies, six assaults, 105 break-ins, 158 thefts and six car thefts.
