Hillenbrand is a US conglomerate. The beginning of the company marked the takeover of the coffin manufacturer Batesville Casket Company in Batesville by John A. Hillenbrand in 1906. When Hill-Rom was founded by John Hillenbrand's son William A. Hillenbrand in 1929, the company was expanded into the direction of medical technology. In 1971 Hillenbrand Industries went public. Due to a later split of the company, Hill-Rom was separated from the new Hillenbrand Inc. with the coffin manufacturer Batesville as a subsidiary. Hillenbrand Inc. is now a holding company for several mechanical engineering companies, including the German Coperion since 2012 .

To date, Hillenbrand is one of the largest manufacturers of coffins in the United States with the Batesville brand, which accounted for 35% of total group sales in 2017.
