Najat El Hachmi (born July 2, 1979 in Nador ) is a Spanish writer.

life and work

Najat El Hachmi was born in Beni Sidel in the Moroccan province of Nador . At the age of eight, as part of family reunification , she came to Vic in Catalonia, Spain, where her father was already living. When she was twelve years old, she began to write literary. In her works she reflects on her own reality and approaches the two worlds to which she belongs - the Catalan and Moroccan or Berber cultures. Her first, strictly autobiographical book, Jo també sóc catalana ( I am Catalan too ), deals with the question of identity and the process of rooting in the new home.

She studied Arabic Philology at the University of Barcelona .

Since the publication of her first book, Jo també sóc catalana (I am Catalan too) , she has participated in various round tables and given lectures in Catalonia and other countries. There are contributions from her in radio and press, for example. B. in Catalunya Ràdio or El Periódico de Catalunya .

The novel The Last Patriarch with which she became famous won the 2008 Ramon Llull literary prize. The novel tells the story of a Moroccan immigrant who settled in central Catalonia, an omnipotent, sometimes despotic patriarch, faced with the cultural changes of his daughter, who breaks with traditions and adapts to the values ​​of the new society in which she lives , adjusts. The novel has been translated into 10 languages.

At the beginning of 2011, the book La caçadora de cossos (The Body Hunter ) appeared , in which she addresses the topic of sexuality. In 2015 she won the BBVA San Juan Prize for La filla estrangera (The Strange Daughter) , which won the Ciutat de Barcelona Prize in Catalan Literature. In 2018, Mare de llet i mel (Mother of milk and honey) was published.
