Hillenkreuz

The listed Hillenkreuz from 1872 is a cemetery cross on the St. Johann cemetery in Dillingen in Saarland and named after Dean Johann Peter Hillen (1869–1907). This initiated the construction of the Saardom . Wilhelm Hector was to become the architect ; Hillen's successor, Dechant Prior, awarded the contract to Peter Marx .

history

The inscription on the cross and the fact that the dean is buried at the feet of the cross suggests a grave cross . The function of the cross, however, is that of a cemetery cross, since it was erected as a monument in 1872 with the construction of the new cemetery. In the municipal order of 10 July 1868 reinvestment of the cemetery with overcrowding of the old town was located in the cemetery founded. In 1876 the cross was knocked over by a storm. Since a restoration was not possible, the stone carver Mummenthal was commissioned with the creation of a crucifix of a similar size including a body for no more than 300 marks. This cross was also the victim of a storm on July 20, 1895, which the church tower of St. Maximin could not withstand either. The cemetery file of June 3, 1896 documents the assumption of the costs of 655.70 marks.

In 2009, the commitment of the city of Dillingen to the restoration of the cross was honored with the Saarland Monument Preservation Prize in the Public Owners Group.
