history
Wooden platform
The Himmelberg has been a popular destination for families, clubs and school classes since the middle of the 19th century because of the good view of the Leine valley and its proximity to Alfeld . As early as 1896 there was catering on the hilltop in the summer months. Around 1900 the Alfeld Beautification Association erected a wooden observation frame there. It was built into the fork of an oak tree .
Iron construction
Due to the weather instability of the facility and the tall trees, the decision was made in 1930 to build a lookout tower . The 17 m high iron structure was completed in 1930 and inaugurated in 1931. The construction costs of 4000 Reichsmarks were borne by the city and the district of Alfeld (Leine) . Support came from the population through donations and material as well as work done by Alfeld companies.
Steel and concrete construction
After around 50 years of existence, the tower was closed in 1984 due to considerable damage. In 1984 and 1985, today's approximately 22 m high tower with 119 steps was built as a reinforced concrete structure. Local authorities covered the costs, supported by donations from the population, local businesses, clubs and associations. The tower was renovated in 2005.
