Magician Brother - The Krabat Song Cycle is the sixth regular album and second song cycle by the band ASP . The album is thematically based on the Sorbian Krabat legend .

General

The album is based primarily on Otfried Preussler's novel Krabat , but in some cases it is very different from Preussler's work. This is due to the fact that the singer and lyricist of the band, Alexander Spreng, was not satisfied with the fast ending of the novel, which is why he continued researching the legend and read the interpretation by Jurij Brězan . The album therefore has an ending that is very different from Preussler's version. The biggest difference is that the Kantorka character dies. After the album was released, the band went on their second and first completely own acoustic tour.

ASP began with the musical implementation of the Krabat saga in 2006 and published five songs on the four different editions of the single I am a true Satan .

music

The album has a much stronger folk influence than the band's previous releases. The rock sound typical for ASP was modeled on the theme, and elements from medieval rock were added. The guest vocals by Eric Fish ( Subway to Sally ) and Lisa Pawelke (ex- Faun ), who both come from this genre and each sing once in a duet with Spreng, also fit in with this. Some songs, such as Krabat or Abschied , have a more folk-rock-like sound, other songs are more based on traditional songs (including Die Teufelsmühle and Betteljunge ), while Der Schnitter Tod is an interpretation of a German one Folk song .

Some songs on the album were already released on the single Ich bin einrue Satan in 2006, because the band didn't want to reveal too much about the subsequent album Requiembryo with the bonus tracks on the single , which was the end of the band's previous song cycle . These songs also included the two duets My heart always knows you (with Lisa Pawelke) and Zaubererbruder (with Eric Fish ), the latter being different from the album version. Eric Fish and Alexander Spreng swapped their verses for dramaturgical reasons, as Spreng basically took over Krabat's voice on the album and it “would otherwise not have been right”.

Guest musician

In addition to Eric Fish and Lisa Pawelke, guest musicians include Thomas Zöller ( bagpipes , hurdy-gurdy and low whistle ), Almut “Ally” Storch ( violin ) and Sylvia Eulitz ( cello ). Zöller already worked with ASP on Requiembryo and Humility . He plays on the wizarding brother Great Highland Bagpipes , Border Pipes and Scottish Smallpipe, as well as flutes and hurdy-gurdy and, like Storch and Eulitz, was also represented on the subsequent acoustic tour.

Trivia

  • A collaboration with Micha Rhein, the singer of In Extremo, was originally planned.
  • The album was originally supposed to have the title Krabat , but this was waived due to trademark concerns.
  • The song Panik from the album From the Deep - The Black Butterfly IV was influenced by Krabat . This becomes particularly clear when comparing the song with the song Abschied , because both contain the line of text The wheel must keep turning .
