Hinduism in Switzerland

The Hinduism is in Switzerland 's third largest religion after Christianity and Islam . In April 2017, a Hindu umbrella organization was formed.

Number of members

According to the census in 2000, 27,839 inhabitants of the designated Switzerland as Hindus (0.38 percent of the population). Most of the Hindus are Tamils from Sri Lanka (81.2 percent). About a third of the Hindu community in Switzerland has the status of a refugee or asylum seeker.

In previous censuses, Hindus were grouped with other non- Abrahamic denominations (especially Buddhists) than other churches and communities . These were 0.12 percent in 1970, 0.19 percent in 1980, 0.42 percent in 1990, and 0.78 percent in 2000 (0.38 percent Hinduism, 0.29 percent Buddhism, 0.11 percent other).
