Backward

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hintaus (Austrian) refers to the street of the farm exits, the barns and sheds behind the respective land of the villagers in rural areas of eastern Austria .

Characteristic

Historical map of Leopoldau with the Hintaus-ways.

Since all neighbors have such a rear side of their property, this creates a complete street, parallel to the actual street with the house entrances. The specialty is that these streets in the back (at the back) do not have their own street name. They are referred to as the back of the respective streets. Thus only every second of the parallel streets in such a village has a street name. In fact, this rule is partially broken. Most of the time, the back road is a quiet street with little traffic, children playing and agricultural equipment parked. Hintaus exists as a noun and an adjective.

Geographical distribution

This phenomenon exists in rural areas of Lower Austria and Burgenland . In wine-growing areas in particular , it is often found near old winegrowers' houses that stretch from one street to the other. Here there is a "vornaus" with the house and possibly a sale and a tasting room as a tavern while hintaus is operating with viticultural infrastructure such as press and cellar as well as the access for tractors and other agricultural equipment.

example

Andau in Seewinkel in Burgenland has a very regular structure of street, back, street, back, etc.

Demarcation

Hintaus is not to be confused with Hinterhaus , a structural complex with one or more inner courtyards, which can usually be found in larger cities such as Vienna, Hamburg and Berlin.
