Hintergasse (Bruneck)

Back alley with connecting corridors between the houses

The Hintergasse is located in the historic old town of Bruneck in South Tyrol .

Back alley

The Hintergasse runs roughly the same way between the Stadtgasse and the Graben as it runs from the Rienz in the east to the Universitätsplatz in the west. Originally there was only the Stadtgasse in the Middle Ages, the houses of which were enclosed by the town fortifications and the moat. When the Prince-Bishop of Bressanone and the city council approved around 1400 that stables and workshops for locksmiths and blacksmiths could be added to the city wall , the back alley was also created. The alley was first mentioned in 1382 as the "back alley" . As the name suggests, the backs of the houses on Stadtgasse and also those of the ditch lay on it. Because some buildings on Graben and Stadtgasse often had the same owners at the same level, they built connecting corridors over the back street, which gives the street its characteristic appearance. Despite the picturesque arches that span the alley, and although many buildings have historic structures and are listed , the narrow back alley has remained a quiet part of the pedestrian zone in the old town compared to the neighboring streets .
